Support from Volunteers
How Can SCCA Volunteer Services Help Me?
We have caring and compassionate volunteers to help you during your treatment at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA). Please contact us if you have any questions or if you would like to utilize the support offered by Volunteer Services. We can be reached Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at (206) 288-1075 or by e-mail at voluntee@seattlecca.org.
Inpatient Volunteer Support
Inpatient volunteer support for patients and families is available in the adult unit at University of Washington Medical Center (UWMC) and in the pediatric units at Seattle Children’s. At UWMC, services and programs such as the resource library, the Living Well with Cancer series, the Beauty and Cancer program, and the specialized concierge service strive to assist you in many ways. At Seattle Children’s, Child Life volunteers provide valuable and comforting interaction with patients, and services throughout the hospital benefit the entire family.
Patient/Family Volunteers
These volunteer provide practical support (such as shopping trips), social support (such as sightseeing and outings) and emotional support to our patients and their families. Patients and family members from outside of western Washington are matched with volunteers for the length of their treatment here in Seattle. Read more about being a patient/family volunteer.
Volunteer Drivers
Volunteer drivers transport patients, donors and caregivers who are from outside of western Washington to and from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and Boeing Field. If you would like a volunteer driver, please give advance notice of at least three business days because this service depends upon volunteer availability. Read more about being a volunteer driver.
Tour Guides
Tour guides offer tours of inpatient units at UWMC and Seattle Children’s and of recommended housing options in the Lake Union, First Hill and University District areas for consultation patients and families.
Guest Services Volunteers
Guest Services volunteers are located in the main lobby of the SCCA clinic. They provide a welcoming presence, information and assistance (such as wheelchair escort, patient parking validation, taxi requests and shuttle information) to all patients and visitors at the clinic. They provide information about the Seattle area and offer support services for patients and families, as well as passes and tickets to local concerts, museums, sports games and other diversions. Guest Services volunteers are available Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and occasionally on Saturday. Read more about being a Guest Services volunteer.
Child Life Volunteers
Child Life volunteers offer diversionary activities, playgroups and companionship for pediatric patients and patients’ family members up to age 18 in the fifth floor playroom at the SCCA clinic. Activities include crafts, games, storytelling, watching videos and friendship. Read more about being a Child Life volunteer.
Patient Events
Patient events occur once a month at Hutch School located in Pete Gross House. These events give patients and families an opportunity to take part in an activity with other patients and volunteers in a safe and inviting social setting. Flyers for these patient events can be found in the Patient & Family Resource Center on the first floor of SCCA. Past events include bingo night, craft parties, movies, back-to-school dances and holiday activities.
